6/10/2023 0 Comments I have never known menThe opening lines of Mary McGrory’s review of Crow Field, Boylen’s first novel, in the New York Times captures what might attract some readers and repel others: “Anyone who things that a Dali canvas should be wired for sound or that the Ancient Mariner would be the perfect dinner guest should be entirely charmed with Crow Field. Though a few critics appreciated what she tried to do, most found her choice of characters and plots too weird for literary fiction yet not weird enough to fit with a genre label like horror or science fiction. Her three novels were published in the age of Eisenhower and Father Knows Best, when men like Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs could get away with writing about outsiders and fringe lifestyles but women had to conform to stricter stereotypes. Margaret Boylen was a writer ahead of her time. Margaret Boylen, from the dust jacket of The Marble Orchard.

Voss was published in 1957 and, as I say, it won the Miles Franklin Award, and it had a fair bit to do with White winning the Nobel Prize. We might explore that idea as our discussion unfolds. But it is also appropriate because it's just two days after Anzac Day, and I reckon this novel has a lot to say about death and sacrifice and being Australian in ways that overlap with Anzac Day. It's an appropriate choice because we're approaching the centenary of White's birth, which is why we did The Aunt's Story last month. In fact it's probably the most famous novel Australia's ever produced. Michael Cathcart: It's our practice here every final Friday to read an Australian classic book and the book this month is Patrick White's most famous novel Voss. I’ve been trying to figure out why The Verdigris Pawn feels so much like a classic, timeless middle grade fantasy in the vein of Diana Wynne Jones or Kelly Barnhill and here’s what I’ve come up with. if he can go from pawn to player before the Land tears itself apart. But it just might be Beau who wields the power he seeks. Teaming up with a fiery runaway boy, their mission quickly turns into something far greater as sinister forces long lurking in the shadows prepare to make their final move-no matter what the cost. For the first time, Beau begins to question everything he’s ever been told and sets off in search of a rebel who might hold the key to setting things right. That is, until Beau meets a girl who shows him the secrets his father has kept hidden. With little control over his future, Beau is kept locked away, just another pawn in his father’s quest for ultimate power. At least, that’s what Beau’s father has been telling him his whole life, since Beau is the exact opposite of what the heir should be. 6/8/2023 0 Comments Jacqueline susannI think the most unbelievable thing to them was that I was voraciously reading full length novels written for adults in 2nd grade. Yes, she HAD given it to me, and yes, I WAS telling them the truth about the content of the book. During the entire time I kept trying to tell them to look at the book for themselves to see what it was about, but they were so sure that I had made off with one of my mom's smut books, and that Jacqueline Susann couldn't possibly write anything that wasn't smut that they wouldn't even look at it.įortunately my mom let them have it when she got there. The principle took it even worse than my teacher, so they called my mother and requested that she come to pick me up. I tried to tell her that the book was about Jacqueline Susann's poodle, but she was having none of that and dragged me to the principle I always brought my books in to school so I could read them during my free time, or on the bus, but when my teacher saw this book she accused me of reading smut - loudly and in front of my entire class. I went to grades 1-7 at Anshe Emet here in Chicago, which is a Jewish parochial school. I have very vivid memories of the book and probably remember it as being much better than it actually is because it caused a big controversy. My mom gave me this book when I was in 2nd grade. This book will forever be etched in my brain! 6/7/2023 0 Comments Taproot by Keezy YoungHonestly speaking, I’m suuuuuper picky about my western graphic novel art. If Taproot is anything to go by, I’m going to be a fan. There’s nothing against Keezy Young! I just have a terrible head for names, but after this I’m honestly going to Amazon to see if she’s written anything else. The art is pretty different, but probably the tiny thumbnail image looked similar enough that I just thought Taproot was an older work of O’Neill’s. I actually misunderstood who the author was for a long time! I always thought it was written/drawn by the author of Tea Dragon Society, Kate O’Neill. Well, I say that, but actually the library I’m working at now had it and I just picked it up off the shelf when I was on break and read it. I’ve been scoping out this graphic novel for a while now, but I just never got around to requesting it at my library. |
